A multi-grid Cellular Automaton model for simulating dendrite growth and its application in additive manufacturing

The dendrite growth in casting and additive manufacturing is rather important related to the formation of some defects. However, quantitatively simulating dendrites with arbitrary crystallographic orientations 3-dimension(3D) still very challenging. In present work, we develop a multi-grid Cellular Automaton (CA) model for growth. this model, interfacial area further discretized into child grid, on which decentered octahedron algorithm performed. comprehensively verified by comparing prediction analytical models published x-ray imaging observation result, proving that morphologically accurate. After that, temperature gradient cooling rate extracted from finite-volume-method(FVM)-based thermal-fluid was applied reproducing process nickel-based superalloy during single-track electron beam melting process. simulation results agree fairly well experimental observation, demonstrating feasibility effectiveness using manufacturing.
